George O. Halstead, M.D.
Renaissance Medical Care was founded in 2013 by George O. Halstead, M.D. Dr. Halstead entered the medical field later in life to pursue a long-term ambition and dream to practice medicine. After graduating from the Medical University of South Carolina, he completed his internship at the ETSU Family Medicine Associates of Johnson City, Tenn. Dr. Halstead conducts personal, compassionate, and “old fashioned” health care with his patients in today’s fast track medical field. His vision of continual growth to help others, motivates his staff and patients alike.
Prior to entering medicine, Dr. Halstead retired from a successful career as a telecommunications engineer (having an advanced degree in electrical engineering from Cornell). He also served in the U.S. Air Force as an electronics technician.
Dr. Halstead and his wife of forty eight years have two grown children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His personal interests and other life experiences have led him to be a volunteer EMT, search and rescue diver, firefighter, pilot, farmer, and Habitat for Humanity construction manager.
Neal Sanders, M.D.
Dr. Neal Sanders knows the south well. He did his undergraduate degree at University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he majored in zoology (and some parasites along the way!). After that he was inspired to go to medical school and attended the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine, Memphis Campus, then completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. With this new experience, he served the Army as a pediatrician, which prepared him well for returning to the community and clinical teaching in both pediatrics and family medicine at the University of Knoxville. Through life experiences, he saw the devastating impact that anxiety & depression have on families. From his perspective, it is compassion from our fellow human beings that can help us learn determination and persistence to deal with these very common mental disorders. Additionally, Dr. Sanders encourages us to accept the power of counseling and medications together, for maximum benefit.
Dr. Sanders is a long time member of the team and makes the drive here on Wednesdays because of how the clinic values it’s patients. He sees that people are treated first as human beings—and not just numbers. He believes in trying to walk in someone else’s shoes so that we may learn empathy for each other.
When not in the office, Dr. Sanders can be found walking his two greyhound dogs a mile or two. He also enjoys canoeing, especially when he gets to race them! He hopes to see us out there.
Tasha Herndon, C.N.P.
Tasha was born and raised in southwest Virginia and has always had a love for the beautiful Appalachian area. Her interest in healthcare started as a toddler and she has continually progressed within the nursing field. Her nursing education started with an Associate’s degree in 2013 from Southwest Virginia Community College, with the intention of pursuing a Master’s level education in the future.
She received her Bachelor’s in Nursing from King University in 2015. With an intimate desire to become an advanced practice nurse and a heart for sex trafficked victims she was led to enter graduate school. In the summer of 2015, her interest led her to start on her Master’s in forensic nursing at Duquesne University. Because of a loss in her immediate family she put that degree on hold. After much prayer, her faith gave her the guidance to go back to King University to obtain an education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. It is her intent to revisit Duquesne University and obtain a post graduate degree in forensic nursing and later become a Forensic Nurse Practitioner.
It was during her time of nurse practitioner education practicums, where she had the opportunity and pleasure of meeting Dr. Halstead and his amazing team that she then developed an interest in addiction medicine and longed to work alongside Dr. Halstead and his team to meet the needs of those who are suffering with SUD/AUDs. When not working she enjoys the outdoors, weightlifting, going to church and most of all spending time with her significant other Brad , and family. Tasha brings a new dynamic into the overall care of our patients here and we are glad to have her on board.
